I previously wrote about a current exhibit at The MUZEO Museum and Cultural Center in Anaheim, "Painted for the Pictures: The Illustrative Art of Classic Movie Posters."
I loaned a few pieces from my personal collection to this show, including a 1982 rerelease poster of Amsel's RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, two of Amsel's original illustrations for THE BIG SLEEP (1978), as well as a black and white comp by Bob Peak, done for THE DARK CRYSTAL (1982).
I went to the opening ceremony, which was curated by my friend Clark Silva. There I had the good fortune of running into Christian Struzan (Drew's son), and Thomas Seiniger (Tony's son) -- like their fathers, they're both enormously talented creative folks in their own right.
The exhibit shows the work in progress video excerpt I created regarding RAIDERS. Seeing it projected onto a "biggish" screen was bittersweet, as it features my late friend David Edward Byrd, who had passed just five days before.
It was also flattering to have the clip displayed alongside moments from Erik Sharkey's excellent documentary, DREW: THE MAN BEHIND THE POSTER. Drew's work is also represented in the show.
To coincide with the exhibit, the FRIDA CINEMA in nearby Santa Ana will be showing RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, and I'll be participating in a Q&A to follow regarding Richard Amsel's poster work for the film. RAIDERS will screen at 7:15pm on Thursday, March 13th; you can buy tickets here. It's just one of the films being shown as part of the Muzeo poster exhibit.
